The term ‘heirloom’ in agriculture refers to an open-pollinated plant that has been passed down for many generations, often times more than 50 years.
Heirloom vegetables are open-pollinated by natural forces such as wind, water, and pollinating organisms.
Typical heirloom varieties originate before the 1950’s when the first genetically hybridized plants became available.
Through seed saving practices, heirloom farmers can preserve the integrity of the original plant, passing down living history to generations to come.
